The Roundup: Buress, The 5th Starter, Pitching and Payton...

With only less than six days until Spring Training, the battle for the fifth starter is heating up.

Right now, it looks like Brian Buress may have now become the favorite to earn the position. The bats came alive today; however, more important, Buress went 5 1/3 innings, allowing no runs & six hits.

I see him given the spot just because of the experience level, but he looked good at spots in 2007 and then wilted.

Considering the expectations going into the season, no one expects Buress or anyone to set the world on fire, but you never know.

We, at least know of one guy who will not be on the trip to Baltimore -- Jon Leicester. He was optioned to Triple-A and has 72 hours to accept the assignmen! t or become a free agent since he's now out of minor league options; meanwhile, Brian Roberts sat out today because of back tightness.

***

The Sun's Jeff Zrebiec has a piece on the Orioles rotation, and for the most part it is a rehash of something we know -- the starting rotation isn't all that strong and towards the end of it, it's weak.

However, I think Cabrera will be close to .500 and will not nearly be as bad as he was last season; Guthrie will be solid, but closer to league average, Loewen will be need to stay healthy if the Orioles are going to be worth anything; alas, Trachsel, I don't have much hope for, but we know what's all about and the fifth spot is still pretty much undetermined.

Well, Jay Payton ! is a lit tle disheartened that's he not playing everyday and would have liked to earn a chance at a starting job according to a piece by Jeff Zrebeic in the Sun.

Like I have said in previous posts, I find him at least on the field to have always been a real intense individual, and I'm note sure the situation in Baltimore is in line with what Payton needs. I expect him at some point to be traded, but from what I have seen, he's always been a competitor and I'm not surprised he's voicing this to the media -- especially considering his history with the Boston Red Sox.

Melvin Mora is the elder statesmen on the team, and he'll be expected to lend a helping hand, not only on the field, but in the clubhouse...

The Red Sox Head to A Game Seven Against The Rays; Eh, Could It Be Any Other Way?

I knew it was going to come to this -- the Red Sox are too good and they smell fear. Just a few minutes ago, the Red Sox extended the ALCS to Game Seven as they downed the Rays, 4-2, thanks to a clutch home run by Jason Varitek (did he ever need something to happen), and an insurance RBI by David Ortiz.

B.J. Upton was once again a thorn in the side of the Red Sox, by hitting his ninth homer of the postseason off starter Josh Beckett in the first inning; however, after all th! at it was all Boston.

James Shields -- dubbed 'big game James' -- was not as sharp as he went a little over five innings and surrendered four runs (three earned) for the loss. Beckett, who has struggled in the '08 postseason got his mojo back by going five innings, giving up two runs and earning the win. The Red Sox bullpen anchored by Okajima, Masterson -- and ugh, as always Papelbon kept things in order.

Well, after assuming the Rays would dispose of the Sox in Game Five, the boys from Boston have stormed back and showed why they were the favorites all year long to win another title.

Meanwhile, you've got to think that the loss from Game Five is in the heads of Tampa Bay. Literally, they have not looked the same since then, and seem to be pressing; thus, perhaps their inexperience and ability to handle pressure is showing.

Jon Lester is on the mound in Game Seven, and one has to think now that Boston has the undeniable advantage! -- but let's remember what happened in Game Four.

! For the Rays, the pressure is now on them. Please win.

With all for the conjecture and the kind words about the Yankees, just say why you joined the team -- um, for the money.

The Party Is Over For Millar in Baltimore...

Baseball is much of a business as it is a fun game, or a way to relax and escape the pressures of life at least for a few hours.

Kevin Millar yesterday spoke to The Sun's Peter Schmuck, and more or less found out the hard way that the Baltimore Orioles are moving on, and will probably not extend an invitation for him to be part of the squad in '09.

I loved Millar's attitude and spirit with the Orioles; however, even I feel the team should give Huff a chance to play the position everyday or get younger at that spot.

The fun-loving first baseman expressed himself, and he was nothing short of candid, if even heart broken.

Alex Rodriguez's First Spring Training Game...

Interesting reaction to Alex Rodriguez down in Florida. He's booed in his first; however, in his next at bat -- he homers -- and then gets a standing ovation!

Ugh. I guess all that matters is if you deliver and win. I'm sure as long as he hits them out and doesn't struggle at the plate, he'll be embraced by Yankee nation.

O's Win in a Rain-Soaked Game; The Evil Empire Comes to Town...

After a deflating loss to Tampa on Tuesday afternoon that saw Koji Uehara lose despite a strong effort, the Orioles rebounded last night and won in a rain-shortened game defeating the Minnesota Twins, 4-1, in six innings. It was sloppy, wet, and miserable, but the Orioles pulled it out.

Since the Twins are only in town once it looks like Major League Baseball did their best to try to get the game in. Both Baltimore and Minnesota fought through four -- yes, four rain delays -- but the home team came through in the first inning as Nick Markakis hit a two run homer and then Luke Scott drove in a run with an RBI-single. They added another run in the 4th inning as Luke Scott hit a solo home run to put Baltimore up 4-1.

Guthrie Solid; O's Finally Win Out in Minnesota to Close Out Road Trip...

For the first time in a quite a while, Jeremy Guthrie looked like a stopper as he pitched seven solid innings, only giving up a run, as he the Orioles finished off the Twins, 5-1. Overall, it was a solid effort by the team, and instead of finding themselves in an another close game that would end up in a loss, they put their opponents away early and for good.

Guthrie – the defacto ace and lone veteran in the starting rotation of the Baltimore Orioles – has struggled mightily this year with his command and the gofer ball; however, he was effective on the mound and focused. Minnesota scored only in the fourth inning off a Justin Morneau RBI-double; however, they were not able to do much more damage than that.

Baltimore jumped on Minnesota starter Nick Blackburn in the first inning as Nolan Reimold drove in a run with an infield single, and then they scored again thanks a throwing error by Orlando Cabrera to first base that plated Luke Scott.

Judge Rejects Sale of Coyotes

According to TSN:
The Phoenix Coyotes are staying put for now, Hamilton is still on the outside looking in, and the NHL has managed to turn away Jim Balsillie once again.

Arizona bankruptcy Judge Redfield T. Baum rejected the Canadian billionaire's bold bid for the insolvent team Monday, saying in a 21-page ruling that there wasn't enough time to deal with all the unresolve! d issues raised by the unprecedented case.

Balsillie had sought to buy the Coyotes out of Chapter 11 protection with a US$212.5 million offer that was conditional on being able to move the team to Hamilton. He had set a June 29 closing date for the sale in an attempt to speed through the process and have the club in place for the 2009-10 season.

But Baum wouldn't have it.

There were a myriad of legal issues to deal with, including how much the NHL would get as a relocation fee, and not much time to sort them out. There was also a tentative auction set for June 22 looming.

"Simply put, the court does not think there is sufficient time (14 days) for all of these issues to be fairly presented to the court given that deadline," Baum wrote.

The ruling is a victory for the NHL, which had argued that the bid was designed to skirt league rules on the transfer of ownership and relocation and should be rejected for that! reason.

Hockey News Video Discussing Zherdev Arbitration

The first 2:45 or so of the video discusses the Nikolai Zherdev situation. Zherdev and the Rangers go to arbitration tomorrow, July 31st. However, don't expect to hear the results of the arbitration hearing until at least Monday (in my opinion).

Theo Fleury On XM & Release of New Book

I heard Theo Fleury on XM Home Ice this morning discussing his new book "Playing With Fire" which was released a couple of days ago.[Listen]

I've always like Fleury, despite growing up a Rangers fan when I was like 8 years old I had a poster of him above my bed when he was still a member of the Calgary Flames. Then when he became a New York Ranger I got to watch him a whole lot more. Not only was Fleury an exceptional forward who was always a goal scoring threat, he was an antagonizer. He never ever backed down from anybody, which immediately brought this video of Fleury retaliating against Peter Worrell to mind.

This is a book that I'll be picking up in the near future because Fleury sure has a lot of good hockey stories. Hopefully he'll be back on XM in the near future for an! other interview because he's a good guy to listen to. He threw in a quick answer that be might have an opportunity working for the Calgary Flames in the front office right before he ended the interview. So that might be something to expect in the not so distant future.

Here's a descritpion of the book grabbed from Theo's website:
Theo Fleury, at 5'6" made a name for himself in a game played by giants. A star in junior hockey, he became an integral part of the Calgary Flames' Stanley Cup win in 1989. Fleury's talent was such that despite a growing drug habit and erratic, inexplicable behaviour on and off the ice, Wayne Gretzky believed in him. He became a key member of the gold medal–winning men's hockey team at the 2002 Olympics.

The Colorado Avalanche picked up Fleury for the playoffs, and when he signed with the New York Rangers, he was a kid in a candy store. After one season of! his next multi-million-dollar deal, this time with the Chicag! o Blackh awks, Fleury suddenly called it quits and wouldn't explain why.

In Playing with Fire, Theo Fleury takes us behind the bench during his glorious days as an NHL player and talks about growing up devastatingly poor and in chaos at home. Dark personal issues haunted him, with drinking, drugs, gambling and girls ultimately derailing his Hall of Fame–calibre career.

Liga Inggris 2009/2010 | Permintaan Maaf Tak Jamin Fergie Lolos Sanksi

Fergie

Spurs In The Final

By PoshSpur
For THBN

Spurs drew 1 - 1 with Spanish side Real Sociedad putting us into the Peace Cup final with Lyon on Sunday.

Mido scored our goal after good work from Mendes and Defoe created his opportunity.

Martin Jol yet again elected to play an under-stregth side, but the team played very well.

My man of the match award goes to Defoe. He created great space for himself and produced some superb shots on target.

The Mido and Defoe partnership is proving good.

Which side do you think Martin Jol will put out in the final against Lyon on Sunday?

Spurs 1-1 Sunderland

Since we conceded, we've been by far the better side, especially after Ramos changed us to what looks like a 3-5-1-1 formation.

Jenas has also been superb since Sunderland scored.

Modric's double shot was blocked and Jenas followed up on the rebound.

WHL is rocking once again!

COYS!!!

Don't count on a good pre-season

With the likes of the current Champions League holders, Barcelona and Scottish giants, Celtic on our horizon, I do hope that we get modest results against them.

Can you imagine what it will do to our hopes if we thrash Barcelona and Celtic in the Wembley Cup?

All this "we're good enough for the top 4" nonsense really should stop. The truth is that we're nowhere near good enough. Even if Harry does strengthen us with "one or two players".

Let's get behind the side and hope that we can get ahead of the likes of Everton, City and Villa.

Finishing 5th this season will be the hardest feat yet. Let's just hope we're there or thereabouts.

Buang Harapan Cissokho, Milan Siap Sambut Beckham

Sevilla Turunkan Banderol Fabiano

Sebagiamana dilaporkan La Gazzetta dello Sport, Jumat (10/7/2009), pihak Rojiblancos dikabarkan bersedia menurunkan banderol bomber andalnya tersebut menjadi 18 juta euro setelah sebelumnya, keukeuh mematok 30 juta euro.
Jika nantinya berhasil memboyong Fabiano, maka Milan dipastikan bakal memiliki dua bomber potensional asal Brasil.

"Kami butuh satu striker dan satu full-back."

Benarkah?
Blanc.
Talenta Gourcuff rupanya ikut mencuatkan minat allenatore Nerazzurri, Jose Mourinho.

Pato: Langkah Gemilang Milan

MILAN - Terseok-seok di Serie A, bukan berati AC Milan lemah.
Milan sekarang kembali fokus ke Seri A menghadapi tuan rumah Bologna, Minggu (20/9/2009).

Milan Mau Dibeli Raja Minyak

ROMA - Raja minyak Albania, Rezart Taci, mengaku siap membeli AC Milan.

Carlo wants duo to stay

Chelsea have agreed new long-term deals with the likes of Didier Drogba, Ashley Cole, Florent Malouda and John Terry in recent months.

Now with the Blues facing an 18-month transfer ban, they are keen to tie down all their stars to long-term contracts.

And Cole and Anelka appear next in line to put-pen-to-paper.

Ancelotti admits he does not get involved in discussions with players about their contracts - but he admits he wants the pair to remain at Stamford Bridge.

"I don't speak with the players about the contract," said Ancelotti.

"But for me Joe Cole is a very good player and he has to stay in the club and so does Nicolas Anelka."

Cole, who has been linked with London rivals Tottenham, has less than 12 months left on his current deal, whilst Anelka's contract runs until 2011.

Milan - Cagliari.

£20million Liverpool man on recovery route

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez hopes summer signing Alberto Aquilani's return from injury may 'go a bit faster' now the Italian has started running in his rehabilitation.

The former Roma player arrived at Anfield in August after Benitez paid £20million for a player viewed as an ideal replacement for Xabi Alonso, who joined Real Madrid.

However, Aquilani, who has a reputation for being susceptible to injury, has yet to play this season as he was signed when recovering from an ! ankle operation.

Benitez, though, has confirmed that the Italy international has stepped up his rehabilitation by beginning running at the Reds' Melwood training ground.

The Liverpool boss has now hinted Aquilani could return ahead of schedule, telling the club's official website: "He's going forward, progressing and he started running. If that goes okay then everything will go a bit faster.

But Benitez has not set a timescale for Aquilani's comeback, despite reports that the midfielder could be ready to face Sunderland in mid-October.

"We have not set a target or any time, but he's doing well," said the Spaniard.

Ferreira aims to break hoodoo

The two teams meet in the UEFA Champions League at Stamford Bridge with the Portuguese side yet to taste victory in England.

Porto failed to win at Arsenal and Manchester United last season, while more often than not they have also been slow out of the blocks.

Ferreira knows his side have struggled to perform against Premier League opposition and hopes things will be different on Tuesday.

"In the last two seasons we have started badly against English teams but still finished top of our group," said Ferreira.

Different
"I don't know why we have not won against English teams in England but I hope it will be different this season."

Ferreira has acknowledged Carlo Ancelotti's side are their main group rivals, although he insists his team will stick to their style of play.

"Chelsea are one of the best teams in England," he continued. "They are very difficult to start with in the group.

"They have ve! ry good players who are mature and very experienced. They have been playing together for a very long time.

"They are the strongest team in this phase. But we also have a very strong team. We want to keep our own identity and will play the way we always do."

Clijsters (right) and Elena Dementieva are part of a strong field in Cincinnat

Former world number one Kim Clijsters will return to competitive tennis after two years away when she plays Marion Bartoli in ! Cincinnati this week.

The Belgian, 26, retired in May 2007 and gave birth to her first child 18 months ago, but announced in March that she was going to make a comeback.

Her first match back will be against Bartoli, who beat Venus Williams to win the Stanford title last week.

"I'm excited," said Clijsters, who will also play Toronto before the US Open.

"I've been practising for a long time now and I am anxious to start. It was really necessary to practice and get back into shape but now I've been there for a while and I want to play matches. I look forward to playing."

!
I want to take these three tournaments and see: where am I at? What do I need to work on in the off-season?
Kim Clijsters

Clijsters returned to the spotlight in May when she played at Wimbledon alongside Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi and Tim Henman in an exhibition to test the new sliding roof over Centre Court.

But having suffered a series of in! juries in the first part of her career, she admitted getting back to the necessary level of fitness for top-class tennis had been a struggle.

"I had still tried to run and to stay in shape but it was nothing compared to what I was like before, when I was playing," she said.

"Just getting my body back into normal shape after having Jada was tough enough and then trying to get back into tennis shape, it takes a long time, you have to take small steps.

"I didn't want to get injured, I did a lot of prevention exercises. My biggest goal was to try and get my core very stable so I can still move the way that I want to on the court."

Her initial schedule does not extend beyond the US Open, which starts on 31 August, but Clijsters is already ! planning for next season.

! "For me personally, it's not something, not yet at least, about the results," she said. "My personal goals are physically trying to learn again what's missing, what's good and what could be better, and just go from there.

"I want to take these three tournaments and see: where am I at? What do I need to work on in the off-season?

"Although I feel good in practice, that doesn't mean it's going to be that way in matches. I want to get a feel for it all over again and re-evaluate my game and my physical condition and go from there."

Clijsters has won 34 singles titles, including the 2005 US Open, and topped the world for 19 weeks in total.

Pompey 'just avoided going under'

Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie
Storrie said personal relationships helped save Portsmouth

Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie has admitted the club came close to going into administration "a couple of times".

Pompey, who were bought by Sulaiman Al Fahim last week, have sold a series of star names in the last few months in an attempt to balance the books

Storrie said Pompey had been living "way outside our means".

Asked about going into administration, he told BBC Radio 5 live: "On a couple of occasions it got very close."

Storrie added: "It's something I was personally fighting very heavily against but at the end of the day you can only ask people so many times to give you a little longer to pay things.

"Some of the football clubs and the revenue and agents were being absolutely fantastic, and doing a lot of it on my name really and saying 'OK, we'll do it for you Peter'.

"They were being very, very understanding, but even they, rightly so, were getting to the point of saying 'how many more times can we do this?'

"I really do want to say a big 'thank you' to all those people who helped us so much to get us into this position so we're now going forward."

Aston Villa and Fulham played out a draw in a low-key encounter at Villa Park as the hosts missed the chance to move into third in the table.

Middlesbrough and near neighbours Newcastle played out a stalemate in a match desperately short on quality at The Riverside.

Newcastle's Obafemi Martins came closest to breaking the deadlock with a shot that hit the bar after 35 minutes.

He also saw a deflected shot fly just off target after the break.

Afonso Alves shot inches over for Middlesbrough and Magpies keeper Shay Given saved well from Justin Hoyte's effort with 16 minutes left.

Joe Kinnear, confirmed as Newcastle manager until the end of the season 24 hours before kick-off, will be happy with a point that takes them out of the bottom three of the Premier League as arch-rivals Sunderland fall into the! drop zone.

Ricardo Fuller's penalty cancelled out Marlon King's first-half strike at a very foggy Britannia Stadium.

Stoke showed the greater early ambition but could only manage tame efforts from Fuller and Mamade Sidibe.

Hull took the lead with their first shot, King putting the ball in the top corner from eight yards.

Boaz Myhill saved a Fuller header but brought down the striker later in the game, the Jamaican stroking home the spot-kick to salvage a draw.

It was a fair scoreline as neither side were able to exert their a! uthority on the game or create many chances.

Sunderland slipped into the bottom three on a miserable day for Roy Keane's side as Bolton ran riot at a disgruntled Stadium of Light.

The hosts had taken an early lead through Djibril Cisse's classy strike.

But Bolton soon equalised via Matthew Taylor's header and swiftly stole the lead through Gary Cahill's low drive.

Woeful defensive errors then let J! ohan Elmander put away clinical goals either side of half-time as Sunderland fell to their fifth defeat in six league games.

It was Keane's 100th game in charge of the Black Cats, but many Sunderland supporters left before full-time while boos rang out around the stadium at the final whistle following the club's third straight home defeat.
